Reading the city

Year 1 to Year 3

How people actually hold a city in their heads, and why that should decide how it is built.

In 1960 most city planning was cold and clinical, focused on functional grids. Planners were designing for cars and for abstract aesthetics, and ignoring the psychological experience of the people living there. Kevin Lynch changed that by asking a different question: not what a city looks like from above, but how it is read by the human mind.

Lynch pulled from outside architecture to get there. Gyorgy Kepes taught him how humans process shape and pattern. Gestalt psychology explained why we see a circle in a ring of dashes rather than a row of disconnected marks, and why a street reads as a whole rather than as individual bricks and lampposts. Dewey supplied the belief that knowledge comes from interaction with an environment. Tolman had shown that rats build mental maps of a maze; Lynch realised people do the same thing at urban scale.

What follows from that is imageability. A city succeeds not by its skyscrapers but by how easily its parts can be recognised and organised into a coherent pattern. If we did not share some version of that pattern, we could not give directions, arrange to meet, or find our way home.

Space syntax and domestic order

Treating a plan as a network rather than a picture, and reading social structure out of its connections.

Space syntax takes the position that a plan is not primarily a composition but a network. Rooms are nodes, thresholds are edges, and the pattern of connection between them carries information about how a household actually lives — who may pass where, what is seen from where, which spaces are deep in the structure and which sit near its surface.

Applied to domestic architecture in Malta this becomes a way of describing houses without relying on style. Two dwellings can look unrelated and share a syntax; two can share a facade language and be organised on entirely different social logic. Depthmap makes that legible as measurement rather than impression.

The value, and the limit, is the same: it describes relationships very precisely and says nothing at all about light, material or atmosphere. It is one reading among several, and strongest when it disagrees with the others.

Building with what is there

Traditional material practice as environmental intelligence rather than nostalgia.

Hassan Fathy worked against an increasing dependency on concrete and steel, and went back to the earth for organic materials — trading European industrialism for passive design. For him a home was not a status symbol but a fundamental human right, which is how he came to be called the architect of the poor.

His breakthrough at New Gourna was rediscovering the Nubian vault: curved mud brick leaned one against the next, needing no costly wood or steel formwork. The technique had survived three thousand years in the south and been forgotten in the middle and north of Egypt. Under those vaults he set perforated openings so rising hot air could escape, and added the malqaf, the wind-catcher, to funnel high-altitude breezes down into the house.

Mud brick was not a romantic choice. It was cheap and locally available, and it conducts heat slowly — so the interior stays cool while the desert bakes, then releases the stored heat back through the cold night. The material is doing the environmental work that machinery would otherwise have to do.

The same argument carries into Maltese practice: globigerina limestone, lime mortars and renders, traditional roof build-ups and ventilation strategies. These are not heritage decoration. They are a record of what worked in this climate before it was possible to brute-force comfort with energy.

A home was not a status symbol but a fundamental human right.

Decay, salt and the ethics of repair

What stone actually does over time, and what that obliges a conservator to decide.

Conservation begins with a physical fact: stone does not fail all at once, it fails by mechanism. Salt crystallisation driven by evaporation rate and supersaturation, freeze-thaw, biological colonisation, the incompatibility of a modern repair mortar with a soft historic substrate. Each leaves a different signature, and reading the signature correctly decides whether an intervention helps or accelerates the damage.

That technical reading then runs into a question technique cannot settle. Repair implies a judgement about which moment of a building's life is the authentic one. Restoring to an imagined original erases the evidence of everything since; leaving decay to run its course is also a choice, made on someone's behalf.

The honest position is that conservation is not neutral maintenance. It is authorship with a very long time horizon, and it should be argued for rather than assumed.

Intervening in heritage

How contemporary work meets an existing building without either pastiche or erasure.

The recurring problem in contemporary practice on historic fabric is the choice between imitation and rupture. Imitation flatters the old building and confuses the record of what was built when. Rupture asserts the present at the cost of the setting. Neither is automatically right, and the case studies are more useful than the principle.

What separates the convincing interventions is that the new work has an argument about the old one — it reveals a structural logic, recovers a lost circulation, or makes a previously invisible relationship legible. The material contrast is the consequence of that argument, not the point of it.

This is also where the philosophy of conservation and the design studio meet. A project is not resolved by declaring an attitude to the past; it is resolved by demonstrating one at the scale of a junction.

Machines that read buildings

What computation can and cannot be trusted with in heritage and design.

Parametric design does not mean a computer invents the form. It means relationships are described as adjustable rules, so that when one input changes — rib spacing, sheet thickness, roof curvature — the connected geometry responds as a single coordinated system. The designer still decides what the rules are for.

The newer question is machine learning applied to heritage: automated condition surveys, classification of decay, reconstruction of missing fabric. The capability is real and the temptation is obvious, because survey work is slow and expensive.

The reservation is about what gets lost. A judgement about significance is not a classification problem. If a model proposes what a missing element looked like, someone still has to decide whether installing that guess is honest. The tool changes the cost of an opinion, not the responsibility for holding one.
