What is a staircase?

A staircase is a measurement of the body repeated in space.

A stair solves a difference in height, but it does so by asking the body to repeat a rhythm: lift, place, balance, repeat. Every riser anticipates the leg; every handrail anticipates uncertainty; every landing interrupts effort with a moment of stillness.

This makes a staircase more than circulation. It is a device for changing speed, posture and viewpoint. A turn can conceal a destination. A landing can become a balcony. A climb can make a familiar site appear newly distant.

Applied hereThe project treats ascent as a sequence of framed pauses. Its value lies not only in connecting two levels, but in making the passage between them worth noticing.

The proposal follows the logic of the existing fabric while making movement legible. Rather than competing with its setting, the new structure draws a precise line between levels.

Plans and sections choreograph a calm ascent. Landings widen into moments of rest, orientation and encounter; the stair becomes a small public room in motion.
